Nile Cruise From Cairo

Two very different trips go by the same name. Here is how to tell them apart.

Search for a Nile cruise from Cairo and you will find two very different products under the same words. Knowing which one you are looking at saves a lot of confusion.

Option 1: Start in Cairo, Fly to the Ship

This is what nearly every Egypt program means by “from Cairo.” You arrive in Cairo, spend two or three nights seeing the pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the museums, then take a short domestic flight south to Luxor or Aswan to board the ship. At the end of the cruise you fly back to Cairo or straight home. It is efficient: the 600-odd kilometres of river between Cairo and Luxor would otherwise take days.

What to fit into Cairo

  • The pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, ideally early in the day.
  • The Grand Egyptian Museum beside the Giza plateau, home of the Tutankhamun collection since it fully opened in 2025.
  • Saqqara and the Step Pyramid of Djoser.
  • Islamic Cairo, the citadel and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar.

Option 2: Sail the Whole River From Cairo

For decades almost no ships sailed between Cairo and Upper Egypt. In recent seasons a few operators have brought back long itineraries that do. The British operator Riviera Travel, for example, lists 14-night Cairo-to-Aswan sailings on the MS Movenpick Darakum in 2026 and 2027, calling at Beni Hasan, Tell el-Amarna, Abydos and Dendera on the way to Luxor. Departures are few and space is limited, so these sailings are usually booked many months ahead.

StopWhy it matters
Beni HasanRock-cut tombs of Middle Kingdom governors with painted scenes of daily life.
Tell el-AmarnaThe short-lived capital of the pharaoh Akhenaten.
AbydosThe temple of Seti I, with some of the finest relief carving in Egypt.
DenderaThe Hathor temple, famous for its painted ceilings and rooftop chapels.

Some Luxor-based ships also make a short northbound detour to Qena for Dendera, which gives a taste of these sites without the full two-week voyage. Ask our advisors which departures do.

Nile Cruise From Cairo: Questions

Do Nile cruises leave from Cairo?

A few do. Most programs that are sold as starting in Cairo actually spend two or three nights in a Cairo hotel and then fly you to Luxor or Aswan to board. True Cairo departures are long sailings of around two weeks and run only a handful of times a year.

What do the long Cairo sailings see that others miss?

Middle Egypt: the rock tombs of Beni Hasan, Akhenaten’s city at Tell el-Amarna, the temple of Seti I at Abydos and the Hathor temple at Dendera, before joining the usual Luxor–Aswan stretch.

How many nights should I spend in Cairo?

Two full days is the minimum for Giza, Saqqara and a museum; three lets you add Islamic Cairo and the bazaar without rushing.
