Egypt Eclipse Cruise 2027
More than six minutes of totality, almost on top of Luxor.
Get Free Egypt River Cruise QuotesOn 2 August 2027 a total solar eclipse sweeps from the Atlantic across Spain and North Africa, through Egypt and on to Arabia — and its longest stretch of darkness falls almost on top of Luxor. That timing has turned the Egypt eclipse cruise of 2027 into a Nile departure people are planning a long way ahead.

You can zoom in on the path line by line with NASA’s interactive path map for 2 August 2027, and see the wider schedule on NASA’s future eclipses page. Luxor sits well inside the path, so a ship moored there or sailing nearby is in an excellent position. Weather odds are on your side too: clear skies are the norm in Upper Egypt in August.
What an Eclipse Nile Cruise Looks Like
Eclipse departures are built like a normal Luxor–Aswan program, but timed so the ship is near Luxor on the morning of 2 August. Viewing usually happens on the open sun deck or at a riverside or desert site chosen for a clear horizon, with an astronomer or guide talking you through first contact, the diamond ring and totality. The rest of the trip runs on summer hours: temples at sunrise, the heat of the day on board, and evening sightseeing when it cools.
- Expect sailings around the eclipse to cost more than an ordinary August departure, and to sell earlier.
- Ask exactly where the ship will be at 1 pm on 2 August, and what happens if it is delayed at the Esna lock.
- Check whether eclipse viewers, a specialist guide and the viewing site are included.
- Hotel rooms in Luxor that week will be in demand; book pre- or post-cruise nights early.

Eye Safety
Looking at the Sun during the partial phases — even when most of it is covered — can permanently damage your eyes. Use certified solar viewers (ISO 12312-2) or a solar filter on cameras and binoculars until the Moon completely covers the Sun, take them off only during totality, and put them back on the moment the first bright bead of sunlight returns. NASA’s eclipse safety advice explains each step.
Egypt Eclipse Cruise 2027: Questions
When is the 2027 eclipse in Egypt?
Monday, 2 August 2027. NASA puts greatest eclipse at 10:06 UT, which is around 1 pm Egyptian summer time, in the desert just south-east of Luxor.
How long will totality last at Luxor?
NASA gives 6 minutes 22.6 seconds at the point of greatest eclipse, which lies close to Luxor; in Luxor itself totality is only seconds shorter. That makes it one of the longest total eclipses visible from land this century.
Is August too hot for a Nile cruise?
It is very hot — midday temperatures in Luxor routinely pass 40 °C (104 °F). Eclipse programs plan around it with dawn touring, long breaks on board in air-conditioning and plenty of water. Travelers with heart or heat-related conditions should talk to their doctor first.
Do I need eclipse glasses?
Yes, for every partial phase before and after totality. Use viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard, and only look with the naked eye during totality itself. Follow NASA’s safety advice.
