Egypt River Cruise FAQ
How much should I tip on an Egypt river cruise?
Tipping is part of daily life in Egypt. Most ships suggest a crew gratuity collected at the end, plus a separate tip for your Egyptologist guide. Some programs include gratuities; ask what yours covers so you are not paying twice.
What should I wear on a Nile cruise?
Light, loose, breathable clothes that cover shoulders and knees for touring; a warm layer for winter mornings and evenings on deck; comfortable walking shoes for uneven temple floors; a smart-casual outfit for dinner.
Which cabin should I book?
On most Nile ships the higher decks have better views and less noise, but ships moor side by side in Luxor and Aswan, so any window can face another ship while docked. Balconies are a bonus when sailing, not at the moorings.
Is Abu Simbel included?
Sometimes. It is about three hours by road from Aswan, or a short flight. Check whether your program includes it and how you get there; the road trip leaves in the very early hours.
Can I cruise the Nile with children?
Yes. Children usually enjoy the tombs and the felucca sails; check the line’s minimum age and whether family cabins or connecting cabins exist.
Should I choose a dahabiya instead?
A dahabiya is a small sailing boat with a handful of cabins that moors at quieter spots. It is slower and more intimate than a cruise ship. Our sister site Nile Riverboat Cruises compares the two styles in detail.
How far ahead should I book?
For the holiday weeks and the 2027 eclipse, as early as you can. For other cool-season dates, several months ahead gives you a good choice of ships and cabins.
What money should I take to Egypt?
Some Egyptian pounds for small purchases and tips ashore; there are cash machines in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. Ask your line which currency it prefers for the crew gratuity.
Can I drink the tap water?
Stick to bottled water, which ships supply, and use it for brushing your teeth as well. Ice and salads on board are prepared for international guests.
Do I need travel insurance for a Nile cruise?
We strongly recommend it, with medical and evacuation cover, bought when you pay your deposit so that cancellation cover starts early.
